What the CPI Report Got Wrong for Retirees

What the CPI Report Got Wrong for Retirees

The Government’s Inflation Math Doesn’t Add Up for Retirees

Charlie Palmer

The government just reported that consumer prices rose 4.2% in May.

The headline got the attention. The footnote didn’t.

Here’s the part worth knowing.

What is the Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The Consumer Price Index is built around working-age households. It tracks what full-time employees spend money on and weights the index accordingly. The Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), the annual increase that’s supposed to protect retirees from inflation, is pegged to that number.

The problem—retired households spend their money differently.

Spending for those on fixed incomes goes to things like healthcare, utilities, and groceries. Not commuting costs or work-related expenses.

There’s actually a separate government index designed for Americans 62 and older called the CPI-E. This indicator weights those categories more accurately. Historically, the CPI-E has shown a higher rate of inflation than the CPI itself. But the government doesn’t use it to calculate your COLA.*

This year that gap is expensive.

Where the COLA Lands

The 2026 COLA came in at 2.8%. But it used data from the third quarter of 2025, before the Iran war sent energy prices up 23.5%.** Gasoline is now up over 40% from a year ago. Food, electricity, and medical care are all running above 3%.***

In other words, the raise retirees received in January was priced for a world that no longer exists.

The gap between what retirees were promised and what prices are actually doing is now a difference of 1.4 percentage points and growing.

Takeaways

What this means practically:  every dollar of fixed income loses purchasing power when consumer prices are rising at 4.2% . Not dramatically, not catastrophically—but steadily. A 1.4 percentage point gap between your income adjustment and actual inflation doesn’t sound alarming until it compounds across four or five years.

Fortunately, real estate-backed income doesn’t work that way.
